Beginning of the year information
We are going to have a terrific 2019-2020 school year! This website contains important information that you will need for the school year. Please read through it thoroughly, and if you have any questions see your child’s teacher. Please visit this website and class Dojo weekly to find out the latest happenings in the kindergarten classroom.

- First Day, Tuesday, August 20th (Please come into the classroom with your child on the first day of school for a special story. Afterwards PTA will provide Kleenex and Coffee). Thereafter, we will ask you to say goodbye to your child outside in the class line. For the first two weeks of school, we ask that parents do not come into the classroom or the kindergarten hallway at all. This will help your child adjust to the school experience.
- Drop-Off and Pick-Up – Please bring your child to the south playground by 8:40 am. Children should not be dropped off before 8:30 am. There is no adult supervision before then. Dismissal is at 3:30 pm outside at the south entrance (kinder playground). Teachers will walk students outside and stay with them until they identify the person picking them up. At which time, students are required to raise their hand and get a sticker from their teacher. If your child does not have a sticker, please send them back to get one. This is for your child’s safety. Please make sure they know who is picking them up from school. If you are late picking up your child, we will take them to the office.
- Weekly Folders – Every Friday your student will bring home a folder with several items in it: homework, monthly newsletter, info from the school; student work, etc. It is extremely important that you go through the items in the folder, take them out, and return the folder the following Monday.
- Homework –Homework will consist of reading each night, documented by a reading log, memorizing sight words (this is VERY important to your student’s success in reading --we will send home a folder with lists), math activities, handwriting practice, and various special projects throughout the year.
- Reading Logs – Students are expected to read or be read to every day. Reading Logs will be sent home in the weekly folder. Be sure to return the log on the due date.
- Extra Clothes –There may be a time in the school year when a student may get extremely messy or have a bathroom accident. We ask that each child bring an extra set of clothes to school in a plastic bag marked with his/her name. If your child has an accident they can simply change and continue with their learning for the day. We will send the soiled clothes home, and be sure to replace it the following day.
- Special Helper of the Day – Each day our class will have a Special Helper. On that day, the Special Helper can bring ONE special item from home for show and tell. It must be small enough to fit into the Special Helper Backpack (more information to come). The first show and tell will be a special project (see below). Also, the Special Helper will bring a healthy snack to share with the class. The snacks need to be store bought, nut free, washed and ready to eat. Please help us out by making snack time “teacher friendly” i.e. small, simple, easy to pass out snacks (One item per child is sufficient). The students needs a snack every day, so please check the Friday folder or the kinder website for when your child is special helper.
- Special Projects – We will be doing various special projects throughout the year. These projects need to be completed at home with your help. Our first special project is the All About Me book. This book needs to be completed and returned Monday, August 26th. Children will be presenting these books in class beginning Monday, August 26th as their first show and tell.
- Recess – Students will go outside onto the playground every day that weather permits. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, you must apply it before school. Teachers are not allowed to apply sunscreen. Students may keep a hat inside their lockers to wear out on the playground during recess time. Students should bring a water bottle (with their name on it) to keep in their lockers and use when needed. It is VERY hot in our school.
- Attendance – Kindergarten learning happens in class. Many activities are done without paper and pencil and cannot be sent home in the form of make-up work. Please make sure your child is here everyday they are healthy. If your child is absent, please call the attendance line 720-424-7784.
- Birthdays – Students are welcome to bring treats on their birthdays. However, DPS policy states that food must be store bought. No homemade food is allowed. The treats need to be simple, small, individual items that can be easily passed out, i.e. cupcakes or cookies. Please speak with your child’s teacher to make arrangements before bringing birthday treats.
- Lunch- Lunch begins at 11:22. Students can bring lunch from home or purchase it in the cafeteria. You can sign up and pay on line at myschoolbucks.com or with the lunchroom manager.
- Life Skills – Kindergarten students need to be independent of adult help with several life skills. If your child struggles with tying shoes, zipping or buttoning jackets/pants, and going to the restroom etc., please work with your child on these life skills at home.
- Volunteers – We often need help with various classroom activities. If you would like to volunteer to help in the classroom or go on field trips, you must be approved by DPS. We ask that you fill out the volunteer form online no later than August 26th. Forms can be found at this link: Https://app.verifiedvolunteers.com/promoorder/aefce395-3927-40d6-bc56-96d00650624e. The application process consists of a background check, and may take several weeks. Your help is greatly appreciated.
- Field Trips - Field trips are an exciting part of the kindergarten experience. We will be asking for a minimum of $30 from each student. We will also need parent volunteers to chaperone. Chaperones will drive individually to the field trip destination. They are responsible for a small group of children the entire field trip. Siblings are not allowed on kindergarten field trips. This is for safety and educational purposes. The fee to chaperone is $5. Chaperones must be pre-approved volunteers, please fill out a form in the office.
- Supplies – Please check the kindergarten website for a complete list.
- Information Sheet – In order to have information available at our fingertips in the classroom, we ask parents to fill out the Information Sheet sent home in Friday folders and return it to school as soon as possible. We do realize that you have filled out many similar forms for the office, and we appreciate you taking the time to fill out one more.
